So many people have been extremely worried about Kevin Conroy’s absence from the latest Batman installment; Arkham Origins.
I, myself am one of them! How could we possibly place ourselves in this particular verse in Gotham, without that epic voice emerging from beneath the cowl?! Insane right?
Well, there are a few things that will definitely help to calm our nerves… sort of.
The new Batman voice will be that of Roger Craig Smith. Sound familiar? It should if you’re an avid fan of Assassin’s Creed, or if you have played Batman: Arkham City.
In Arkham City, Smith voiced two-face!
So he’s got a connection to the game already… so what?
Well, do you remember what he sounded like? Here’s a refresher:

In Assassin’s Creed II, Revelations & Brotherhood, he voiced Ezio!
This voice is significantly different from Two-face in that he’s got a pretty thick accent.
Forgot Ezio? here’s a refresher: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4D8su84xRM

These are some pretty diverse acting choices… on top of that, he’s voiced Sonic the Hedgehog in the movie Wreck it Ralph.

Also, he voiced the character ‘Thomas’ of Regular Show

Prince Orm in Young Justice

Harrison Pike in Medal of Honor: Vanguard

Captain America in Avengers Assemble (Animated)

Gilbert G.P. Guilford in Code Geass

Ok, so he has tons of voice acting cred… and all of these voices have been distinctly unique according to the character (with amazing acting)
But how would we know exactly what type of Batman Roger Craig Smith will be portraying???

That question has been buzzing in the minds of mine own, as well as fellow Bat-fans in the batmanverse. Although seeing his voice credentials might soften the blow of an absent Kevin Conroy… we are still cringing at the thought of a different voice actor for Batman. After all, we grew up with Conroy as Batman. Since the 90’s animated series to today… who else has voiced Batman?! Maybe one or two other actors, you might think… right?
WRONG. Try 26!
…and did we notice at all- only a few.
Don’t beleive me? Here’s the list:

The point I’m trying to make here is very clear….
Yes, Kevin Conroy is the most familiar Batman voice actor of all time!
and if you call yourself a batman fan, and did not know this before reading this blog… you can stab yourself in the face now.
….right now
Anyway, being a Batman fan, and having submerged myself to all the animated series, spin-offs, and video games possible, after a while, I tend to disregard the actual voice of Batman, and become more submersed into the character due to the actual acting.
Maybe that’s all we need to pay attention to.
I’m very curious as to what you think- Should we all be signing a petition to get Kevin Conroy back?
Or
Will we be able to sustain Roger Craig Smith as Batman?
Think about it :)

Considering that Christopher Nolan aims for the more realistic perspective of the Batman Universe…. I’d say probably not. UNLESS there was a way the ‘supernaturalism’ could be changed slightly or toned down. For Example, let’s look at Poison Ivy… there are several version of her as just a temptress, one who control plants, and even have them do her bidding. But whether you’re looking at pre-crisis, post crisis, or new 52 birds of prey, I think that if Nolan were to have added Poison Ivy into his films, she probably would have just been someone obsessed with plants, who uses botanical poisons either to kill or to threaten a town… through, lets say -the water/sewer system- just as the joker did in arkham city.
But considering that many people wouldn’t agree this type of synopsis, I’d say we’re better off with the versions Nolan created (critically speaking)
I think that there would definitely be NO WAY Nolan would have used a character such as ‘Clay Face’ -where his story is 100% unrealistic… unless he were to use the ‘first appearence’ version, where he was an aspiring actor who sank much too deeply into character, donning the ‘clay face’ mask of the character he played, he’d wreak havoc… but again… fans familiar with the modern version of the character will not be pleased :)
